TAMPA, FL (April 17, 2024) — The Tampa man who shot at three Hillsborough County Sheriff’s deputies last weekend at Beacon Meadows Park in Carrollwood will remain behind bars until trial. The State Attorney’s Office successfully argued that 32-year-old Anthony Carpenter remains a danger to the community and should be denied bond.

Deputy Sean Bush testified in court today that when deputies arrived at the park on April 14 in response to neighborhood safety complaints about Carpenter, the defendant became angry and defiant. The three deputies on scene continued to try to deescalate the situation for over 20 minutes. During that time, Carpenter removed a knife from around his neck, repeatedly told deputies he was unarmed, and refused to keep his hands out of his pockets despite repeated commands to do so.

In an attempt to gain control of the situation, deputies deployed their tasers on Carpenter, who then fired three rounds toward the three deputies. One of the bullets hit Deputy Kerr Craige’s service radio which was located on his shoulder area. The impact from the bullet hitting his service radio and microphone left Deputy Craige with a torn ligament and a possible broken bone.

“It is truly a miracle that Deputy Craige is alive today, and that none of our deputies were seriously injured. This defendant was on a mission to harm members of law enforcement, the very men and women who put their lives on the line for us every day. When he attacked them, he attacked our community, and he will be held accountable for his actions,” said State Attorney Suzy Lopez.

Carpenter is charged with three counts of attempted first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer, resisting an officer with violence, and armed trespass on property.

TAMPA, FL (April 12, 2024) — Cody Shimooka, 15, will be charged as an adult in the shooting death of a 14-year-old boy on Easter weekend. The defendant will be charged with manslaughter with a weapon, tampering with physical evidence, and minor in possession of a firearm.

On March 30, Shimooka called 911 to report that he accidentally shot his friend while helping a neighbor pack to move. Shimooka originally told officers he located a firearm in the nightstand and picked it up before stubbing his toe, causing the gun to fire. After a thorough investigation, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office uncovered additional evidence that suggests Shimooka was not truthful in his statements to detectives.

“This tragedy claimed the life of a 14-year-old with a full life ahead of him. The defendant has pending cases involving other violent incidents in juvenile court already. He made an adult decision and will be facing charges in adult court as a result. My heart is with the family and friends of the victim whose life was cut short due to the defendant’s reckless actions,” said State Attorney Suzy Lopez.

TAMPA, FL (March 26, 2024) — Sunny Wallace, the defendant charged with the attempted murder of three individuals in an Ybor City parking garage over the weekend, will remain behind bars until trial. The State Attorney’s Office successfully argued that no conditions of release or bail would protect the community from the defendant’s dangerous behavior.

One of the victims from the shooting, who is wheelchair bound while recovering from his injuries, testified about the defendant’s actions on March 23. The victim said he was walking with his brother and friend back to their vehicle in the parking garage after a night out in Ybor City. The victim walked past a vehicle when the defendant opened the passenger side door and asked what he was doing there. The victim says he stepped back from the vehicle before Wallace opened fire. None of the victims knew Wallace or had any contact with him that night.

Wallace attempted to flee law enforcement and crashed into another vehicle before being arrested. Wallace admitted to police he shot the victims in self-defense because they were “talking smack.” When asked what the victims said to Wallace, he told police he wasn’t sure. A police detective testified Wallace appeared impaired at the time of the interview which happened shortly after the shooting.

“Three young lives could have been lost in this senseless act of gun violence. We are fortunate the victims are here to tell their stories, and we will help them on their road to recovery while seeking justice together. I appreciate the Tampa Police Officers whose swift action on the scene helped to quickly identify the shooter to take him into custody,” said State Attorney Suzy Lopez.

Wallace has faced other gun-related charges as a juvenile out of Levy County. He allegedly used a firearm during a fight at a house party in 2020. He is currently on probation out of Marion County for resisting a police officer and disorderly conduct.

TAMPA, FL (March 20, 2024) — Abron Scott pleaded guilty today to the gruesome rapes and murders of two Tampa women whose killings remained unsolved for decades. A judge handed down two additional life sentences to Scott, which will be served consecutively. Because Scott is already serving a life prison sentence in an unrelated murder case, he has been sentenced to a total of three consecutive life terms.

Scott pleaded guilty in court today to the 1983 rapes and murders of Barbara Grams, 19, and Linda Lansen, 41. Lansen’s daughter, who was only 7 years old at the time of her mother’s murder, told Scott during her victim impact statement how his heinous actions forever changed the trajectory of her life.

Scott’s codefendant, Amos Robinson, is also charged in both rapes and murders and is currently facing the death penalty if convicted. It was the diligent work of the State Attorney’s Office Conviction Review Unit and the Tampa Police Department that allowed the true killers to be held accountable for their crimes.

During the course of our agency’s Conviction Review Unit work, a Tampa Police Department detective indicated that DNA evidence in the case involving Barbara Grams would likely be available at the Medical Examiner’s Office. This outstanding police work resulted in finding DNA evidence that helped to solve these cases.

Under State Attorney Suzy Lopez, more than 100 cases have been processed by our Conviction Review Unit. In three of those, there was insufficient evidence to sustain a conviction and they were released from prison. Amos Robinson is set to be back in court for a disposition hearing on September 20.

TAMPA, FL (March 18, 2024) — The defendant charged with murdering a 52-year-old gay man at West Dog Park in February will remain behind bars until trial. A judge ruled that Gerald Declan Radford is a danger to the community and denied him bond in a Hillsborough County courtroom today. Radford faces second-degree murder charges. In addition, the state is seeking an enhancement as a hate crime under Florida Statute 775.085.

The lead detective testified in court about Radford’s statements to deputies after the shooting. Radford told investigators he was in a “scuffle” with the victim when he pulled his gun and fired. Following a thorough investigation, deputies learned that Radford routinely used bigoted slurs toward the victim and even talked about wanting to harm him at the dog park prior to the shooting. The detective also testified about a video found on the victim’s cell phone that details how Radford told the victim, “You’re gonna die,” just 24 hours before the shooting.

Prosecutors told the judge that Radford also remains a flight risk. Although he is a legal resident, he is not a U.S. citizen and could potentially flee the country if granted bond. The defense attorney asked for a $50,000 bond, but a judge denied the request.

“Crimes of hate are some of the clearest dangers to our community and are a threat to every citizen of Hillsborough County. This defendant’s actions led to the senseless death of a man who was simply trying to enjoy a morning with his dog at a local park. We will work tirelessly to ensure he is held accountable for his actions,” said State Attorney Suzy Lopez.

TAMPA, FL (March 8, 2024) — The State Attorney’s Office has filed second-degree murder charges against Gerald Declan Radford in the shooting death of a 52-year-old man at the West Dog Park in Tampa. The defendant alleged self-defense, but following a thorough investigation, the evidence shows Radford was the aggressor and was motivated by the fact that the victim was a gay man. In addition, the state will be seeking an enhancement as a hate crime under Florida Statute 775.085.

Radford called 9-1-1 on the morning of February 2, 2024, and told dispatchers he shot a man in the dog park. When investigators arrived, Radford told them he and the victim were in a “scuffle” when he pulled his gun and shot the victim. There were no other eyewitnesses to the incident, and the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office continued its investigation.

Multiple community members came forward in the days and weeks following the shooting to report hearing Radford use bigoted slurs toward the victim, even talking about wanting to harm him while at the dog park. Detectives also learned the victim created a cell phone video 24 hours prior to the shooting warning his friends that Radford told him, “You’re gonna die.”

“We should all be able to enjoy a day at the dog park without the fear of gunfire. This victim also deserved to live free from fear and discrimination based on his sexual orientation. The evidence shows the defendant’s actions were motivated by hate, and he will be held accountable. My heart is with the victim’s family and large group of friends as we fight for justice together,” said State Attorney Suzy Lopez.

Members of the community have actively shared concerns with our office regarding the length of time it has taken to reach a charging decision. It is important to note how difficult it can be to refute a Stand Your Ground claim in some cases because the only other witness to the incident is deceased. Throughout the course of this investigation, community members stepped forward with important information about ongoing tensions that helped add context to the incident. Combined with video recordings created by the victim before he was killed, investigators were able to build a strong case to bring to our office for prosecution.

TAMPA, FL (March 5, 2024) — A judge ruled that the man who shot and killed a father of five following a Riverview road rage incident will remain behind bars until trial. The State Attorney’s Office successfully argued that Jorge Ramirez remains a danger to the community and should not be granted bond.

During today’s pretrial detention hearing, the victim’s fiancé testified that Ramirez was ramming the back of their family’s green Chevy Suburban prior to stopping in a residential area and opening fire. Ramirez originally became angry because he could not pass the Suburban to cut through a parking lot to avoid waiting at a red light.

The lead detective said the victim’s 10-year-old son warned his father that Ramirez had a gun as he exited his black BMW. The young boy then took cover in the family’s Suburban and shielded his younger brother from gunfire. The lead detective also testified that the defendant said, “Watch this,” to his passengers before killing the victim.

Prosecutors presented a photo the victim’s fiancé took just before the shooting which shows how far away the defendant’s black BMW sedan was from the family’s Suburban. Ramirez was behind his BMW, more than 20 feet away from the victim when he opened fire.

“The only way to protect the citizens of Hillsborough County from this defendant is to ensure he remains behind bars until trial. The victim’s fiancé should be commended for her bravery, taking the stand today to recount the worst day of her life. We will continue to work diligently to make sure this defendant is held accountable for his actions,” said State Attorney Suzy Lopez.

Ramirez is charged with second-degree murder and faces up to life in prison if convicted.  Read the previous press release here.

TAMPA, FL (March 1, 2024) — A jury found Vakarvery Scott, 22, guilty of first-degree murder in the shooting death of a young nursing student. The victim and her sister were driving a few blocks from Julian B. Lane Riverfront park in December 2021 when Scott fired into their vehicle 12 times, killing one woman and injuring the other. Scott was also found guilty of attempted first degree murder for injuring the second victim.

Assistant State Attorneys Elizabeth Muller and Melissa Grajales presented evidence to the jury that tied Scott to the crime, including surveillance video of the defendant committing the shooting, as well as his fingerprints found on the murder weapon. Ballistics testing also proved that the bullets from Scott’s gun matched those retrieved from the victim’s body. Scott admitted to investigators he was responsible for the shooting.

“We should all be able to drive in a car near our beautiful city’s waterfront without the fear of gunfire. The victim in this case was a nursing student with a loving family and a full life ahead of her. My thoughts are with the victim’s loved ones as they continue the grieving process. The defendant will spend the rest of his life in a prison cell thinking about his reckless actions,” said State Attorney Suzy Lopez.

State Attorney’s Office Files Second-Degree Murder Charges in Riverview Road Rage Incident

TAMPA, FL (February 21, 2024) — The State Attorney’s Office filed second-degree murder charges against Jorge Ramirez, the man who shot and killed a father of five following a road rage incident in Riverview. Ramirez was arrested in January and charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. Following a review of the completed investigation, The State Attorney’s Office added the additional murder charges.

On January 16, Ramirez was driving his black BMW sedan with two friends when he approached the victim’s Green Chevy Suburban from behind. Witnesses say Ramirez was trying to pass the Suburban to cut through a parking lot to avoid waiting at a red light. The passengers in Ramirez’ vehicle say he became angry when the Suburban blocked the entrance to the parking lot. Ramirez began closely following the victim’s vehicle afterwards, ramming the hitch several times.

Ramirez passed the Chevy Suburban in a residential area and quickly stopped to exit the car. The victim also exited his vehicle and retrieved two metal pipes from the trunk. Ramirez, from behind his black BMW, shot at the victim who was more than 20 feet away at the time of the shooting. This all occurred while the victim’s fiancé and children were watching from the Suburban. Witnesses from both vehicles say the victim was never running toward the BMW or threatening anyone when shots rang out.

“After a thorough review of the investigation from Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, it is clear the defendant was the aggressor in this case. He had no regard for the victim’s life, or the lives of his small children who tragically watched their father die in the middle of the road. My heart is with his fiancé and loved ones as they work through this unimaginable trauma,” said State Attorney Suzy Lopez.

TAMPA, Fla. (February 6, 2024) — The man responsible for injuring a 4-year-old in a road rage incident will remain behind bars until trial. The State Attorney’s Office successfully argued that 34-year-old James Jackson is a danger to the community, and the judge denied him bond in a Hillsborough County courtroom today.

Jackson was driving a white Kia Optima on January 30th when he became angry that a white Chevrolet sedan merged into his lane. The woman driving the Chevrolet sedan testified on the stand today that she looked into Jackson’s eyes while he shot at the car repeatedly with her two children screaming in the backseat. She pulled over and realized her 4-year-old was shot.

Jackson is charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery with great bodily harm, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, discharge of a firearm from a vehicle, and felon in possession of a firearm. Additional charges include fleeing to elude police and possession of cannabis.

“It is clear the defendant has no regard for human life if he is willing to shoot a firearm at a car with young children inside. I cannot imagine the horror of what this young victim and her family have experienced due to the reckless actions of this cold-blooded criminal. My office will work diligently to ensure this defendant is held accountable for his actions,” said State Attorney Suzy Lopez.

Jackson was previously found guilty of attempted murder in 2006, but the case was overturned on appeal after a judge found his confession should not have been admitted into evidence. Jackson still served 10 years in prison for his crimes. He was then released in 2016, only to reoffend less than two years later. He was sentenced to two more years in Florida State Prison.
